  OUR HISTORY

Founded in 1885, the Toledo Tennis Club is the 15th oldest tennis club in the United States. Originally known as the Outing Club, it was officially named The Toledo Tennis Club in 1901.

With membership down to fewer than 100 during WWII, the club was eventually given to the Ottawa Hills Board of Education. Scheduled for auction in 1946, a group of members organized the Toledo Tennis Properties, Inc. saving the Club and the present Indian Road site.

In the late 40s, Nick Beresky became our first tennis pro. Demand for lessons grew in the early 50s,

and Vic Braden, who later became a world-renowned tennis pro, was hired as assistant. The 60s saw the popularity of tennis skyrocket, and so did club membership. The original clay courts were eventually replaced with Har-Tru courts in 1983. By 1993, the club was so popular; it was impossible to gain membership in the same year as an application.

No history of the Toledo Tennis Club would be complete without mentioning Bill Rathbun – a TTC member for over 60 years! Bill was a mentor to many and a friend to everyone. His character, kindness, and encouragement were evident to all who knew him. Rathbun’s Porch is named in his honor.

Today, TTC boasts an active and diverse membership with 15 outdoor tennis courts --10 hartru courts,  5 hard courts and pickle ball, making it the best outdoor tennis facility in the Toledo area.
